Scuba in Aruba (Sept 2008)

September 2008 found us flying around Hurricane Ike to the southern Caribbean island of Aruba. (Yes Ike delayed our plans by a day as we were scheduled to connect in Houston about 3 hours after anticipated landfall there. After some reshuffling of our flight plan, Continental re-routed us through Newark-- boy, was that interesting... even the pilot had a "New Joisey" accent.) Since this was the first time that Steve & I had dove since we received our scuba certification about 1.5 yrs ago, we were able to combine a trip to Boise with a refresher course, which helped reassure us of our skills (and signals). For the holiday, we partnered with Steve's sister (Tempie) & husband (Steve B) to share expenses and the fun. After some prodding, they received their scuba certification a week before our departure. And so, we had the fun of the dives together also. We did two 2-tank dives (on two back-to-back days). There was one other single who joined us on our dives who was vacationing from the UK. Although Ian had more experience diving than any of us, it had been several years since he had last dove that it appeared that we were not holding him back at all. Here then, are some of our pictures (photo credit to Steve) from the underwater adventure... On our second dive of the day, we were in the area of a ship- and plane wreck. Here we are approaching the wreckage of the plane... Yes, it's really me! (It's hard to smile with the regulator in your mouth!) I'm standing in the wreckage of an old ship. On day two, we dove to a depth of 75'... our PR to date! As you can see from the following pictures, the water is definitely a deeper blue-green when you get that deep. Our friend, Ian, on his way down. Some amazing coral. Arriving at the second shipwreck. Look carefully.... there are 5 of us peering through the opening of the boat. Left to right: Heather, Ian, Tempie, Steve S (bottom) and Steve B (top). Tempie & Steve B, chugging along. Adios.
